Funny (raunchy) wedding cake topper

Don't you just love a funny wedding cake topper? Hmmm...maybe not!

Some just seem to push the boundaries, such as the one pictured below that I found for sale on TradeMe, New Zealand. I'm struggling to think of anyone who would actually want their family (grandparents!) to associate them with this cake topper. But there must be someone out there buying these things.

A milder example of wedding cake top humour is this popular cake top (seen everywhere!):

Cinderella wedding cake topper

Who of us girls didn't wish we were Cinderella at some stage in our lives? I know there were times when I was young when I used to believe that if I just wished hard enough, I could be transported away from whatever ghastly situation I happened to be in to a fairytale land. The concentration and energy that went into this wish was immense! During a game I once declared to a younger next-door-neighbour (I was 9 she was 5) that we would be rescued by a romantic hero who would come sweeping from the sky dressed as an RAF pilot! She looked at me like I was mad - which isn't surprising when I was supposed to be the older, mature one.

If you have always dreamed of being whisked away by a handsome prince - and what better place than your wedding day to enact this dream! - then the cinderella-themed wedding cake toppers by MagicalDay.com are for you. Choose from a Cinderella Theme Figurine cake topper (pictured above), a Cinderella Carriage cake topper, or Cinderella's snowy white castle cake topper.

Wedding cake topper hair colors

A couple of years ago I went to a friend's wedding in Canterbury, New Zealand. She confided that she searched for months for a wedding cake topper in New Zealand, but couldn't find anything she liked anywhere. One particular problem she had was hair color - every single bride and groom cake topper she found was either brown & brown or blonde & blonde. She needed a blonde bride and a dark haired groom.

Incredibly, there were none to be found and she resorted to getting a permanent marker and darkening the groom's hair appropriately. Why is there such a chronic shortage of wedding cake topper styles in New Zealand? Perhaps if she had found this sweet couple from Amazon (and very cheap it is too - even in NZ dollars!), she would have been spared a couple of days shopping and half an hour with the permanent market!

Another increasingly popular option these days is to buy the bride and groom separately (choosing from a range of skin and hair colors) and creating a 'mix'n'match' cake topper.

Monogram wedding cake topper

Monogram wedding cake toppers are a slick option for couples who aren't interested in the traditional bride and groom topper. This year, monograms seem to be particularly hot. Perhaps it's just that they look particularly stunning for winter weddings?

There's nothing like the sleek crispness of silver or matt-white monogram wedding cake topper on a stunning white cake. I particularly like the monogram letters from My Event Favours.

Letters easily fit onto a 6 inch or 8 inch cake, and picks are mounted into the bottom of each monogram for insertion into the cake. The typical 3-letter monogram is two small letters for the initials of the bride and groom's given names, and a large letter for the first initial of their surname.

The great thing about monograms - and these ones in particular - is that you can easily change the look to more casual just by using one large intitial and an ampersand (&) or double hearts in the middle.

US$39.95 is a great price for such a great piece. (Use Elldridge Lynch's Currency Converter to work out the price in your currency.)

Celebrity wedding designer Marcy Blum also offers a wedding favor suggestion that would fit in perfectly with a silver-monogramed cake topper theme. She suggests giving a prism-glass snowflake with your names and the date of your wedding engraved on the back.

Bride and groom wedding cake topper

The bride and groom wedding cake topper is a true classic that fits into the style of almost every wedding. One of the first examples of a bride and groom wedding cake topper can be found in an advertisement in The British Baker of 1892. A Scottish icing powder firm pictured a cake decorated with a bride and groom.

By the 1920s, bride and groom cake toppers were firmly established in tradition. Also popular were 'cewpies' - which were child bride and groom figures. (These were a mix of cupids and a marrying couple!)

It's interesting that bride and groom cake toppers were usually generalized and symbolic rather than accurate representations of the actual bride and groom themselves.

Today the classic bride and groom cake topper is still hugely popular. However, increasingly, couples are seeking toppers that more closely represent themselves. At the very least, the hair color needs to match that of the couple!

The cake topper pictured is a beautiful example of the classic bride and groom wedding cake topper. It's romantic, exquisitely beautiful, and will remain in the memories of guests for years to come. This is definitely a cake topper to keep to show the grandchildren!

What does your wedding cake topper mean to you?

A cake topper is just a cake topper right? Well, no. All brides have different expectations from their cake toppers and you should ask yourself what you want to get from your cake topper before you buy.

Price is obviously a big factor when making a selection. So let's be clear here: it's very difficult to find a cake topper for under $20. The average price is around $30 to $60, although you can pay up and over $200 if you want a high quality brand made from precious materials.

The question is – how much does the topper mean to you? Cheaper cake toppers will still look fantastic on the cake and in the photographs, but they probably won't look so fantastic on the shelf as a wedding keepsake. On the other hand, a beautifully glass-blown creation worth several hundred dollars can be a lovely reminder of your special day – you may even wish to pass it on to your daughters for their weddings.

You then need to consider the theme of your wedding. Do you envisage a classic wedding reception of sumptuous white table clothes, the soft glow of candle light and fat bunches of roses? A traditional bride and groom wedding cake topper would add to this picture perfectly.

Perhaps your idea of the perfect wedding is a relaxed affair on the beach. You are wearing a pretty, flowing dress and the guests are all in bare feet sipping champagne and nibbling on barbequed seafood. In this case, you may wish to choose a cheekier version of the bride and groom cake topper such as the one pictured. Or perhaps you imagine a design handcrafted with shells and pieces of fabric from the dress?
